Meeting Notes

ABGC Crush   – U19 D3 – 16 Current Penalty Points

The meeting began with introductions and the R&D Director explaining the procedure of the hearing and the appeal process

The Head Coach began his testimony by stating that he has been coaching for 19 years, and he has never appeared before any committee. He stated that the season was a frustrating one due to the condensed season and missing players. He explained that Player #7 was defending herself from an attack received from an opposing player and was subsequently issued a red card. He further explained the other cards received were due to “clumsy” players and late timing.

Player #7 began her testimony by stating that there was a lot of trash talking during the match. An opposing player shoved her after the play. She encountered the same player on a 50/50 ball, and she shoved her back.   The opposing player pulled her ponytail and forced her to the ground to which she fought back. The CR gave both players a red card. After the match, the coaches from both teams had the girls talk to each other. Player #7 stated they both understood they were wrong, and they could have handled the situation better.

The Team Manager prepared a short statement and read it into testimony. She stated that the season was compacted and difficult due to an unavailability of players. She said that she felt the red card awarded to Player #7 was justified based on the disappointing behavior. However, she felt the way the two coaches handled the incident after the match by having the players talk to each other was incredible. She expressed concern with the deterioration of youth sports with inappropriate “trash” talk and swearing.

After deliberations, the Committee directs the following:
The Committee commended Player #7 for taking responsibility for her actions. The Committee also commends the HC’s actions in handling the situation so that both players learned that there is no place in youth sports for such violent conduct. The Committee decided to issue the team an Oral Censure for their actions. . It should also be noted as stated in WAGS’ Rule N.1.e, that (8) penalty points shall be carried forward to the next season in which the player, coach, or team participates, irrespective of seasonal year.
The ABGC Crush U19 Division 3 was informed that they have the right to appeal the decision of the WAGS R & D Committee according to Rule O, “Protests and Appeals Procedures”.

REST Nightmares   – U17 D4 – 16 Current Penalty Points

The meeting began with introductions and the R&D Director explaining the procedure of the hearing and the appeal process

The team manager began his testimony by stating that the Head Coach and Club Representative were out of town and that he could give explanations for the cards.  He stated that the center referee had her back to the Player #4 and opposing player while offense, abusive, insulting language was said, but he doesn’t believe that Player #4 stated anything inappropriate. He believes the CR gave the red card to the wrong player, and it should have been opposing player. He further explained that the HC received a red card for dissent and that he agreed with card because you should never show dissent to a referee.

A committee member asked if the ejection of the HC contributed to the breakdown of the team receiving more cards.  The TM answered that he didn’t think players were upset or affected by the HC’s ejection.

Another committee member asked what the REST Club will do to address the HC continued dissent after receiving his red card to which the TM replied that he did not know. However, the TM stated that the HC has never received a card and that his behavior at that match was uncharacteristic of him. He has counseled the HC that he should never dissent to a referee.

A committee member asked why the players did not attend or submit statements to which the TM replied that he didn’t understand that the players’ attendance or statements were necessary.

After deliberations, the Committee directs the following:
The REST Nightmares’ HC must serve an additional (1) game suspension in the next WAGS’ match he coaches for his continued dissent after receiving a red card. Judgments by the referee and their assistants must be respected and unquestioned, except in the case of misapplication of the Laws of the Game. And in that event, there are specific and appropriate actions that should be taken. Please remember that a sit-out form needs to be filled out and mailed to the WAGSL R&D Director for each game a player / coach sits out.
Also, the Committee was disappointed that no players’ statements were submitted.   Although the Head Coach was on vacation, it is the responsibility of the Head Coach to comply with the instructions of the WAGS R & D hearing announcement. The purpose of these hearings is to provide a forum to address inappropriate and repetitive behaviors so coaches, players and parents understand their responsibilities and learn in order to make it a more positive environment keeping with the spirit of the game. . It should also be noted as stated in WAGS’ Rule N.1.e, that (8) penalty points shall be carried forward to the next season in which the player, coach, or team participates, irrespective of seasonal year.
The REST Nightmares U17 Division 4 was informed that they have the right to appeal the decision of the WAGS R & D Committee according to Rule O, “Protests and Appeals Procedures”.

TSC Magic  – U14 D4 – 17 Current Penalty Points

The meeting began with introductions and the R&D Director explaining the procedure of the hearing and the appeal process

The Head Coach began his testimony by stating that it has been a difficult year for the team.  They picked up new players from a dissolving team and it took a time for the players to connect.  They were also plagued with injured players leaving them no subs, and they suffered a huge loss when their Assistant Coach was killed at an out of state tournament.    The HC and the other AC became counselor in addition to coaches in helping the girls cope with such loss. Also, their team manager left in mid season, and it took some time to receive the paperwork from her.  However, they took their accumulation of penalty points very seriously and decided to come together as a team to see what they can do to change their direction.

The new Team Manager submitted a very detailed and thorough report to the committee containing statements from the players left on the team who received cards, a history of the team and their difficulties this past year, the teams’ initiatives to change the direction of the team, the club’s Rules of Conduct, Parent Code of Conduct, Coaches Code of Conduct, and the team’s Rules of Conduct with stated consequences.  She explained that they will be implementing a program where they will ask the opposing team to pick a player who shows great sportsmanship on the pitch and give that player an award at the end of the match.  Additionally, they will be in the process of getting a referee to attend a practice and explain to them why the referees make the calls they do.

After deliberations, the Committee directs the following:

The Committee commends TSC Magic for taking the accumulation of 17 penalty points very seriously and putting into place a proactive program to better improve their players. The Committee decided to issue the team an Oral Censure for their actions. . It should also be noted as stated in WAGS’ Rule N.1.e, that (9) penalty points shall be carried forward to the next season in which the player, coach, or team participates, irrespective of seasonal year.

The TSC Magic U14 D4 was informed that they have the right to appeal the decision of the WAGS R & D Committee according to Rule O, “Protests and Appeals Procedures”.
